The DJ is the soul of hip-hop music, but rarely ever gets the recognition he or she deserves. There have been the rare Dr. Dres who have taken center stage by getting on the mic. Most DJs though, prefer staying behind the turntable and letting their music speak. DJ Premier falls in that category.
DJ Premier (or ‘Preemo’ as he’s popularly known), is one of, if not the, most legendary east-coast DJs. He has worked with numerous emcees including rap giants like Nas, Notorious BIG, KRS ONE, Big L, Rakim and Jay-Z to name just a few. This is in addition to being the sonic force behind the iconic hip-hop duo Gang Starr with rapper Guru and single-handedly producing Jeru the Damaja’s albums The Sun Rises in the East (1994) and Wrath of the Math (1996). He has constantly been active as a DJ over the past couple of decades working with legends and up-and-comers alike.
‘Quantity AND Quality’ seems to be Preemo’s mantra, as he has always kept it 100 on the ones and twos. His perfect choice of samples and distinctive scratching style accompany the boom-bap to create an unforgettable musical atmosphere. DJ Premier has lived up to his moniker by providing the world of hip-hop with primo jams.
