Mobb Deep

mobb deep prodigy and havocProdigy and Havoc, together called Mobb Deep (as in, deep with the mob) are a group of rappers from Queensbridge, New York. They entered the rap scene in 1993 with their debut “Juvenile Hell”. It was a moderate success that served as a warm-up for the masterpiece they were about to drop in 1995, The Infamous. This was the album that put the spotlight on them as part of the hottest shit in the scene. The follow-up Hell on Earth was a respectable effort but the group was never able to recreate their initial success, not even with subsequent releases. To date, the group has 8 albums with the latest one curiously named The Infamous Mobb Deep.

Mobb Deep’s sound is dark as a ghetto alley at night with the lights out. Their beats constantly thump while jazzy sounds glide on top. The lyrics are gritty and it is shocking to hear the lines coming outta Prodigy’s mouth who was barely in his 20s at the time. Their tracks feel like the night and listening to them is like taking a first-person trip in the shoes of a ghetto kid living the hardcore life.

Going by their current track record, it’s not a stretch to say that they’ve fell. Their short run with the G-Unit, their numerous random beefs with other rappers and the twitter beef among themselves has lowered their cred a little, but they are still together and doing their thing. While they’re not putting out classics anymore, what they have created with The Infamous and Hell on Earth is some real, essential rap.
